| This translation report is about the translation process of translating a travel notes from Ling-Nam;or,Interior views of southern China,including explorations in the hitherto untraversed island of Hainan(1886),which is a very popular book that introduces the south part of China in 19th century to westerners.It is not only welcomed by westerners,but also quite useful to the present readers who are interested in Hainan Island nearly 130 years ago.The translator chooses two chapters from this book,mainly about the geography,nationalities,languages,religions and local customs on Hainan Island.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is translation task description,in this chapter the translator introduces the author of the book,analyses the style of the original text as well as the original text of this translation assignment.The second chapter is about the translation process,which falls into three categories,i.e.translation theory,translation methods,and the examples.The third chapter is about how to deal with the specific translation problems with the translation methods.It mainly includes the choice of word;participle phrases translation;long and complicated sentences’translation;names of people,places and tropical plants’ translation and the translation of various ethnic groups as well as their historical changes.The fourth chapter is finalization of the translation version.The fifth chapter is conclusion,in which the author discusses the methods of translating the travel notes and generalizes the experiences of this translation practice.During the whole translation process,the translator applies the Skopos theory,the content of which is aims principle,coherence rule and loyalty principle,which guides and directs the translator to solve the various kinds of problems in translation process.Besides the above translation theories,specific translation methods are applied to translate the sentences,namely:literary translation,adverse translation,amplification,and voice conversion. |
