With the development of modern science and technology, scientific English develops increasingly. It describesobjective things and phenomena in a professional language, with a close combination of basic English and professional knowledge.Professional texts of oil and gas development,as a branch of scientific petroleum texts, have their own special linguistic features. In the context of globalization and the energy crisis, communication and cooperation in the oil industry have played an increasingly significant role.As the oil industry plays an irreplaceable pillar role in China, the improvement of its translation quality is necessary. In recent years, studies on oil translation are increasing accordingly, which have made some achievements, but still there exist some problems, like lacking an overall guidance of systematic theories;lacking researches about different texts or concentrating only in a certain field;failing to integrate theory without practice because of the researchers' insufficient grasp of translation theories, etc.,so further studies should be conducted accordingly. The technical terms of technical part in scientific texts only take up 5%to 10%in length of the whole text, and the rest is still the non-technical part of common language,so translators still have a great degree of freedom in translation. This thesis takes examples from the Chinese text of oil and gas development????????????????????and its English translated text Control Theory and Application of Heterogeneous Reservoir Well Pattern Optimization, applying Newmark's Text Typology and using text analysis and inductive and summary methods as the research methods to discuss about the C-E translation methods and techniques on texts of oil and gas development. It aims to deepen translators'understanding of the translation theories and methods of relevant texts in the oil industry. This thesis mainly studies the translation characteristics of texts on oil and gas development and its translation methods and techniques with the guidance of Newmark's Text Typology, and provides some constructive suggestions for thetranslation of texts on oil and gas development. This thesis is made up of five chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction about the research background, research questions, research methods and structure of the thesis.Chapter two is the literature review, providing the situation, characteristics, challenges and development tendencies of oil and gas development and the current research background, and on the basis of former researches, the methods and techniques are summarized.Chapter three,as the theoretical framework, introduces the origin and development of Newmark's Text Typology and main representatives and their opinions, and the links and differences between the three main types of Newmark's Text Typology.Chapter four is concerned withstudies on translation methods and techniques in translation of the texts on oil and gas development. This part is the central chapter of this thesis, which summarizes the translation methods and related techniques used in the C-E translation process, and combines with analyses of concrete examplesunder the guidance of Newmark's Text Typology.Chapter five is the conclusion, which summarizes the major findings, limitations of this study, and suggestions for future research. From the perspective of Newmark's Text Typology, this research studies the translation methods and techniques of texts on oil and gas development. Its major findings are as follows: first, regarding texts of oil and gas development as informative texts, their function affects the selection of corresponding translation methods and techniques in the translation process. The author summarizes the translation difficulties of texts on oil and gas development from the lexical level, syntactic level and contextual level: technical terms and extended special professional vocabularies are used frequently, the uses of long sentences and complicated modifiers increase the syntax understanding and the whole text is described with professional operations and applications;Second, based on different characteristics of texts on oil and gas development, this study analyzes the Chinese text and English text Control Theory and Application of Heterogeneous Reservoir Well Pattern Optimization and summarizes translation methods and techniques of texts on oil and gas development:literal translation, free translation and comprehensive translation as translation methods and adverse translation and linear translation as translation techniques. Finally, after a comparison between the selected texts, some translation problems from lexical, syntactic and contextual level are pointed out, which include inconsistency in terms;the use of second person and inconsistency in terms, etc. After pointing out these problems, related solutions are given and the author hopes to provide reference and suggestions for the translation studies of petroleum-related texts in the future.
