A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Illustrated Guide To Snowboarding(Chapter Nine)

Recent years have witnessed a rising number of domestic snowboarders since this sport was introduced into China.Therefore,translated books and materials related to snowboarding are in large demand by professionals and new learners.However,translation studies on this type of sports texts are developing slowly and translation practice in this field also lacks systematic guiding theories.This report is based on the sports book translation project initiated by the Beijing Science and Technology Press.The translation object is Chapter Nine of the book,The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding.This report takes the translation of The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding(Chapter Nine)as the subject of study,discusses the preparatory work,translation process and post-translation in detail.Choosing the Text Typology as the guiding theory and the present author concluded that the book is a combination of the informative text and the expressive text.After a thorough analysis of the source text and the target readers,the present author concluded that the primary aim of the target text is to provide professional knowledge on snowboarding to snowboarding lovers and also studies the linguistic features of the source text,including the professionalism of terms;the frequent use of the second person point of view;the imperative sentences and short sentences.This project is designed to introduce snowboarding skills,transmitting the information of the source text to target readers accurately.On the basis of case analysis,the present author explores translation strategies and methods: using transliteration for terms;using addition and free translation to realize the effective communication for information which is somewhat implicit or carries rhetorical images;using division and restructuring to deal with long sentences.
