As texts of practicability, political texts are translated with reservation of distinct Chinese political language style and accurate information delivery, which is an important way to build the image of a country or a region. The full text of Report on the Work of Beijing Govemment in 2016 is chosen as the research objective in this thesis. After translation of this text is completed, the research on its English version is conducted from the perspective of Peter Newmark's text typology.Since political texts have expressive functions based on classification of Newmark's text typology, importance should be attached to meaning of source texts and author's ideology, which indicates that Subjective modification by translators is not allowed. Thus, this thesis mainly discusses translation methods of political texts on lexical, syntactic and textual levels, taking into consideration both reservation of Chinese political language style and effective message delivery. This thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter 1 is introduction which involves research background, research objective and research significance.Peter Newmark's text typology classification and translation strategies in different kinds of texts are stated in Chapter 2.Chapter 3 analyzes the type and features of the Report on the Work of Beijing Government in 2016.In Chapter 4,translation methods of this text are illustrated on lexical, syntactic and textual levels based on Newmark's text typology.Chapter 5 is conclusion.According to Newmark's text typology theory and the research on translated version of this report,it can be concluded that political texts with expressive functions are translated semantically in the majority and communicatively in the minority. That is to say, expressive elements in political texts determine that lexical and syntactic structures similar as much as possible to those in the source text are applied to accurately express the meaning of the source text through a full understanding of denotation and connotation between lines in the original text.In the meantime,in consideration of difference between Chinese and English, flexible translation strategies can be adopted by appropriately adjusting syntactic structure to follow the rules of target language. This thesis aims to provide a new perspective for translation of political texts with consideration of both Chinese political language style and accurate message delivery. In addition, the English version of Report on the Work of Beijing Government in 2016 attached to this thesis serves as a reference for foreigners who wish to know much about Beijing's policies and development. It is hoped that it can also attract scholars' attention to translation of capital and local government documents so as to offer chances for capital and other regions in China to display their fruits of development to the world.
