The Value Of Ancient Town's Historical And Cultural Resources And Their Utilization In Modern Times

The tturteenth live-year plan proposed to develop small towns suited to local conditions that are characteristic,integrated with an industry and full of beauty,to expand and guide cultural spending,to realize the protection and conservation of the traditional culture and natural heritages,and to strengthen the protection and utilization of historically and culturally famous cities,towns,and villages as well as national intangible cultural heritages.Based on the theories of history studies and methodology as well as those of tourism,marketing and statistics,this paper uses the Daxu ancient town in Lingchuan County,Guangxi as a case study,to analyse some problems that occurred in the process of the conservation of historical and cultural resources and to try to provide possible solutions.This paper is composed of five parts.The first part is introduction where the results of academic studies on the protection and utilization of historic resource is systematically analyzed.Based on that,a general summary is given,and thus explaining the significance of the topic and the theories and methods to be use.A definition of historic cultural resources is given combined with previous studies.The second part is a review of achievements in Daxu from Ming,Qing Dynasty to contemporary era.Examining the location,formation and development of the town and its culture,the motivations for further development is analyzed.The third part examines the composition of the ancient town,the layout of the ancient buildings,and sorts through the local tangible and intangible cultures.Stone inscriptions are also used to study local cultural characteristics and to understand local cultural content.Such analysis therefore,illustrates the value of the historic and cultural resources in the Daxu ancient town and its significance for modern society.The forth part examines the activates by local government and residents at the call by the state to form and optimize modern public cultural service system and cultural market system.The advantages and disadvantage of conservation of Daxu ancient town under modem economic transition is also examined.The fifth part addresses the problems of the conservation force of the government and that of the folk by examining the current development conditions and answers the question of what role Daxu tourism should play in the conservation of local historic culture.
