A Report On The Escort Interpreting Task For Beijing Citee Golf General Manager

Golf sport,which has always been labeled as an “aristocratic sport”,is a growing industry in China in recent years.Especially after the International Olympic Committee(IOC)included it into 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games,more and more foreign clubs and foreign golf coaches come to China seeking career development.As a consequence,the demand of golf-related interpreters and translators is increasing.With golf's wild spreading in China and the urgent need for translators and interpreters,the author got an opportunity of working as the personal assistant(PA)and interpreter for the general manager(GM)of the Beijing Citee Golf Performance Center for six months from February to July,2016.This paper is a report on the author's escort interpreting(EI)experiencefor the general manager of the Beijing Citee Golf Performance Center and the working contents of the interpreting include both the Chinese-English and English-Chinese consecutive interpreting.It based mainly on the obstacles in golf-related interpreting activities and the author's coping tactics.This paper,correspondingly,provides analyses concerning these difficulties and tactics and summaries.Those difficulties include Kiwi accent,short-term memory burden,comprehension barriers and high demand on the interpreter's physical diathese.The Effort Model of Daniel Gile is applied in the task to help the interpreter complete interpreting activities smoothly under the guiding principles of efforts distribution in the process.And the listening and analysis capabilities,the short-term memory capability and the coordination capability of the Effort Model are on the top during this task.This theory was applied in the task to help the interpreter complete interpreting activities smoothly under the guiding principles of efforts distribution in the process.In the end,the post-interpreting evaluation for the interpreter was marked A by the clients.Through analyzing the difficulties and obstacles during the task,this paper concludes the following points of golf interpreting: 1.Sufficient pre-interpreting preparation is crucial forsuccessful completion of an interpreting task.2.Interpreters should distribute their efforts properly during a task according to the situation.3.Interpreters' psychological and physical diathesis affect the interpreting performance to a large extent,thusthe interpreters' ability to counter pressure,their flexibility and physical quality matter so much.4.It is found during the task that the accumulation of industry-related knowledge is of great importance for delivering a satisfactory result.This paper includes four parts.The first part is the background and features of the task,and a brief introduction to golf and the industry.The second part is about requirements of this task for the interpreter.The third part,also the main part of this paper,depicts the whole interpreting process including pre-interpreting preparation,the difficulties and coping tactics of the task.And the last part is post-interpreting evaluation.It is hopeful that the working experience can be helpful to other interpreters as an example for interpreting study.This paper aims at serving as a reference for golf interpreting and outdoor sports interpreting.Through this interpreting task,the author gained a comprehensive understanding of golf and the golf industry,and a concrete knowledge of golf interpreting.Besides,this golf related practice report is the first one in the author's university and it hoped to be a reference for the following students.
