The Empirical Research On Short-Term Memory Enhancement In Chinese-English Interpreting And Vice Versa

In2007, the first15universities in China were approved to be the pilots of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) degree. Since then, a lot of concern has been given to this degree program by many other universities. So far,159universities have been approved to be the MTI pilot-schools. With two directions of translation and interpreting, MTI is different from academic master of translation. As an education with a strong employment purpose, MTI pays great attention to students’ ability on practice and knowledge in different areas, which also embodies the needs of deepening China’s opening policy.During the MTI education, students will not only learn translation theories and do simulation interpreting exercises at school, but they also have to do many translating and interpreting practice. It is one of their necessary abilities to find and solve problems in their practice.Starting from the direction of interpreting, this report mainly focuses on how to improve short-term memory ability during the process of interpreting through the analysis to three cases in the interpreting practice. It offers strategies and methods to some of the problems through the cases analysis with the aim to improve interpreting quality and personal ability. Many scholars have made researches on improving short-term memory in interpreting and achieved fruitful results on it. This report is an explanation to this problem based on personal experience from the empirical research. It not only proved some theories and methods, but more importantly, the author realized some of his problems and shortcomings and achieved a deeper understanding and discoveries to the application of some methods. No doubt, the knowledge and discoveries from this translation practice will provide a useful reference for future interpreting practice.
