In modern Chinese,institutional abbreviation is large in number and is widely used,and is a language phenomenon that is worth paying attention to.Recently,although people pay attention to Institutional Abbreviation,there is no particular research study on it?Therefore,this study is on institutional abbreviation in modern Chinese,using a number of methods,including literature review,empirical research,descriptive classification,and summaries,in order to draw reliable conclusions and provide some knowledge and suggestions for further research.Worth to mention,institutional abbreviation research is significant for both the compilation of dictionaries and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This paper consists of six chapters,in which mainly discusses the definition of the institutional abbreviation,type and prototype relationship,the pattern of abbreviation,etc.,as follows:The first chapter is mainly on the literature review of abbreviation and institutional abbreviation,and discusses the research value,research methods,research contents,difficulties,etc.At the same time,it points out that people's attention to abbreviation lies mainly in its definition,composition method,the relationship between grammatical function and the prototype,and the use of norms,in which has a considerable positive effect on the features of institutional abbreviation.The second chapter mainly discusses the definition of institutional abbreviation.Abbreviation must meet four conditions,including the existence of prototype form,the prototype form first appeared,and the abbreviation in comparison to the meaning of the prototype form in which is consistently concise.At the same time,abbreviation excludes letters,numbers,and other forms of abbreviation.Though,institutional abbreviation is a formal agency,organization or any other works tackling abbreviation.The third chapter is summarizing the types of the institutional abbreviation.Institutional abbreviation is divided into meaning type,structure type,state type and phonetic type.The meaning type of the institutional abbreviation can be classified into cultural,political,social,economical,military,transportation,etc.The culture structure is considered the largest,reflecting the theme of cultural development.Institutional abbreviation is mainly a noun,and the internal part has different structures,including compounds,verbs,objects,etc.The state type is verbal and linguistic,respectively;the former refers to the temporary fixed abbreviation,while the later is more stable and common.Institutional abbreviation in phonetics is mainly consisted of two syllables,three syllables,and four syllables,in which occupies the vast majority of all the institution abbreviation.The forth chapter summarizes the abbreviation way of the institutional abbreviation.The two most common abbreviation ways of the institutional abbreviation are completely abbreviated and partially abbreviated.The former has eleven ways,mainly in accordance with the language to extract the keyword combination into abbreviation,while the later has four ways,in which mainly related to the entire language of the deletion and retention combined into abbreviation.Then,the relationship between institutional abbreviation and its prototype form is analyzed,in which it so close.From phonetic aspect,the prototype has in general at least two more syllables than abbreviation,and the number of prototype forms from two to six syllables is the most concentrated.From grammatical structure aspect,the prototype form of four to eleven syllables,each can be divided into many language parts,in which is closely related to abbreviation form.From habit and cognition approach,people's usage and creation of abbreviation has a sense and rule.This as much as possible is in line with people's speaking habits and the establishment of associations,to avoid ambiguity,etc.The fifth chapter puts forward the significance of the research of institutional abbreviation.Institutional abbreviation study is significant for both the compilation of dictionary and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Regarding compilation of dictionaries,little linguistic abbreviation should be less received because they do not meet people's habits of abbreviation and for having ambiguity abbreviation.At the same time,attention should be paid to the problem of omission and error reception of the institutional abbreviation.For teaching Chinese as a foreign language,this should let students be more aware of the Chinese culture and certain national conditions,and then understand the abbreviation implication.At the same time,for compiling some dictionaries,it develops some certain teaching courses abbreviation,so that students are able to comprehend modern Chinese.The sixth chapter is the conclusion of this study on institutional abbreviation,drawing some reliable results.Abbreviation is different from contraction,and the institutional abbreviation is divided into meaning type,structure type,state type and phonetic type.Its relationship with prototype form is very close,with the two most common ways of abbreviation: completely abbreviated and partially abbreviated.This study of institutional abbreviation is considered significant for both the compilation of dictionaries and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
