The paper mainly discusses the translating English abbreviations into Chinese and Chinese abbreviations into English, and free contention among the different schools of linguistic in translating is discussed as well.The main points of the paper can be summarized as following:1. Approaches to translating English abbreviations into Chinese, e.g. transliteration; free translation; either transliteration or free translation; partial transliteration and partial free translation; free translation with adding; repeating; cutting; partial omitting; translating according to abbreviated new words; translating on a reciprocal basis; translating into more abbreviated Chinese than original English abbreviations; changing part of speech; extending the meaning of the abbreviated word; translating the English abbreviated euphemism into Chinese abbreviated euphemism; changing order; translating with the original; copying the original; foreign abbreviation translating.2. Approaches to translating Chinese abbreviations into English: e.g. transliteration; formal translation; free translation; free translation with explanation; word for word translation; free translation with adding; cutting; changing order; translating on a reciprocal basis; translating not a reciprocal basis; translating non-Chinese abbreviations into English abbreviations; copying the original directly; returning the Chinese abbreviations from English back into the original English.3. Chapter three deals with English abbreviations should, whether or hot, come into Chinese directly. Section one discusses different versions or approachesof translation should be adopted, and section two is concerned with the advantages of English abbreviation coming into Chinese; in section three, the theoretical element of Chinese abbreviations is analyzed and in section four the vacancy in Chinese expressions for English science and technology translating is briefly discussed.The conclusion chapter mainly quotes the number of English abbreviations used in the press and included in the Chinese dictionaries. The figures from a questionnaire about people from all walks of life accepting the English abbreviations is shown here.
