As the communication between China and ASEAN countries becomes more frequent,the demand for the less commonly used foreign languages(referred as LCUFLs hereinafter)talents is also dramatically increasing.Under such circumstances,abundant colleges and universities in Guangxi have also set up a multitude of LCUFLs majors to meet the market's needs.In the process of implementation,there still exist some nebulous problems pertinent to the construction of LCUFLs education.Moreover,among the present studies,certain issues relevant to LCUFLs education from the perspective of economics of language have not yet been adequately examined and scrutinized.In order to address these problems about the status quo and social need for the LCUFLs talents,the thesis adopts the research methods of literature analysis,questionnaire and interview to explore the current situation of LCUFLs education in Guangxi colleges and universities,as well as the social requirements for the talents in Guangxi.With the purpose of obtaining the scientific information,the thesis takes three universities and colleges in Guangxi as an example,namely Guangxi University,Guangxi University for Nationalities and Nanning College for Vocational Technology.After analysis,the status quo of LCUFLs education in Guangxi displayed the following characteristics:the imbalance of LCUFLs provision,the similarity of talent training objectives,the irrationality of curriculum design,and a huge gap between teacher resources and the scale of students' enrollment.Taken the social demand for LCUFLs talents in Guangxi enterprises into consideration,there are some research findings from the following three aspects,such as the demand for the talents' level,the talents' scale,and the talents' types.The undergraduate talents are the most needed personnel regarded as the main force in the LCUFLs market whereas junior college talents and postgraduate talents are functioned as supplementary elements in the language market.The demand for the talents' scale is continuing to expand.With regard to the demand for the talents' types,the most needed talents are the interdisciplinary talents,the translation talents,and Vietnamese,Thai,Malaysian talents.Moreover,Guangxi enterprises also put forward higher requirements for the talents' comprehensive ability,such as the interpersonal communication skills,and the spirit of team work,and the like.In addition,Guangxi enterprises are not particularly content with the LCUFLs talents.On the basis of this research,some practical suggestions for LCUFLs education in Guangxi higher education institutions are put forward from the theoretical framework of the economics of language,including such domains as the language provision,talent training objectives,curriculum design,the construction of teacher resources,and the cooperation between higher education institutions and enterprises.Finally,it is hoped that this study will help the improvement of LCUFLs education in higher education institutions of Guangxi to cultivate more qualified and ASEAN-oriented talents to serve for Guangxi economic development.
