As Chinese ceramics go global, more and more scholars notice the significance of the English literature which studies Chinese ceramics. From a historical perspective,a large quantity of precious ceramics were traded to foreign countries, but relevant research materials in Chinese are not abundant. Therefore, the English literature which studies Chinese trade ceramics is of great value for Chinese ceramic researchers. However,a lot of Chinese ceramic researchers are equipped with a rich fund of knowledge about ceramic technology, but not proficient in English,so the translation of English ceramic literature is important for them. Therefore,it is necessary to study the translation of English ceramic literature. On the basis of the English-Chinese translation of some excerpts from Oriental Trade Ceramics in South-East Asia,Ninth to Sixteenth Centuries which was written by John S.Guy and published by Oxford University Press in 1986,the translation report mainly analyzes lexical and syntactic features of English ceramic literature with examples;then summarizes some difficulties encountered in translation;at last concludes relevant translation skills. There is a wide use of Chinese Pinyin, ceramic terms, the passive voice and long and complex sentences. This report shows that English ceramic literature unavoidably mentions a number of historical facts which involve many Chinese personal names, place names, book titles and ceramic terms. Therefore, solutions of correctly finding back the original sources of Chinese proper nouns and achieving the equivalent translation of ceramic terms in Chinese should combine the literature research method with some translation techniques such as the literal translation, conversion of parts of speech, change of voices and division. It is hoped that this translation report could offer some references for relevant translations of English ceramic literature.
