A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Management (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The management is a comprehensive discipline that focuses on social management activities and covers many fields.With the development of social productivity and the advance of civilization,the research of management field is also more sufficient.With the rapid development of various types of enterprises in society,strategic management,as part of management knowledge system,is getting more and more attention from managers of enterprises or organizations.The study of strategic management knowledge,combined theory with practice,is helpful for enterprise managers to enhance management awareness,strengthen strategic management philosophy,and make relatively full preparation to successfully handle on the management challenges in fact.The thesis takes the strategic management of management knowledge frame as the theme of source language in the translation practice report.The source language is from Management published in Pearson Prentice Hall in2005 and created by Michael A.Hitt,J.Stewart Black,and Lyman W.Porter.The excerpted materials belong to the information-based text,with the language characteristics of the management text—accurate and precise words.In the process of translation practice,the difficulties appear at various levels,such as proper nouns and polysemy phenomena,long and complex sentences and passive sentences,as well as the conjunction,ellipsis,and reference phenomena.The thesis mainly explores the translation strategies and methods of problems in the excerpt’s translation at lexical,syntactic,and textual levels on management.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the thesis applies the accuracy-oriented translation strategy at lexical level,adopts the domestication translation strategy at syntactic level,and uses the adaptability translation strategy at textual level.Under the guidance of the above-mentioned translation strategies,the thesis adopts specific translation methods to solve the problems in translation.At lexical level,for proper nouns,the main methods include verification of meaning and literal translation.For polysemy phenomena,the thesis refers to contextual analysis and analysis of collocation methods.At syntactic level,for long and complex sentences,the thesis uses division,sequential translation,and inversion methods.For passive sentences,the main resources involve “translation into an active sentence” and “translation into a passive sentence”.At textual level,for conjunction,the focus should be “adjustment of the connected relation” and “omission of conjunction”.For ellipsis,the perspectives involve repetition of the omitted sentence constituents according to specific contexts,such as “repetition of the omitted noun” and “repetition of the omitted verb”.For the reference phenomenon,the thesis selects “omission of personal pronoun” and further translation of “definite article” methods combined with example sentences.The translation practice of management text is of some practical significance.It could promote bilingual learners in the area of management to learn about the relevant contents of strategic management such as competitive advantages,strategic decisions,and strategic implementation steps from the thesis.It is also helpful to explore the characteristics of Chinese and English languages about management books and the relevant translation methods conforming to the expression ways of two languages to take the readers’ feelings into account in the process of conversion between Chinese and English.In addition,the thesis combines a translation theory with translation practice,which is a learning opportunity for translation learners in the primary stage to experience the organization of translation under the guidance of a translation theory.Based on the thesis,the author also hopes to make her contribution to promoting the connection of domestic and foreign management learning,and further enhancing exchanges between China and the West in terms of management.
