In English teaching, textbooks are not only the key to carry out College English Curriculum Requirements(Requirements hereafter),but also the important material and means to realize the goal of English teaching.Whether the English textbooks are appropriate or not will not only affect the selection and application of teaching methods, but also affect the students' learning effect. However, with the development of College English teaching reform, researchers pay more attention to the teaching methods, teachers and learners rather than textbooks. In China, although all kinds of College English textbooks are constantly emerging with unique characteristics, they have been of varying quality, which has brought more confusion to English teaching,so choosing appropriate textbooks becomes an urgent matter. Therefore,it is an ideal way to carry out textbook evaluation by using advanced, scientific, authoritative and applicable textbook evaluation theory. This study aims to explore standards and methods of textbook evaluation which are more suitable for China's actual conditions to perfect the evaluation theory about textbooks in China, and to put forward some reasonable suggestions for the compilation of College English textbooks. In practice,it is helpful for teachers to choose, adapt and use textbooks and to guide the compilation of textbooks,so as to promote the sound development of College English teaching. Therefore, referring to China's specific teaching situation and combining Cheng Xiaotang,Cunningsworth's evaluation methods and theories and something else together, the author intends to make a detailed comparison between New Standard College English(NSCE hereafter)and College English(New Version)(NCE hereafter). On the one hand,an internal evaluation is carried out from the aspects of teaching ideology, teaching methods, language knowledge, language skills, culture, language material and course resources; On the other hand, the external evaluation is conducted through questionnaire to supplement and validate the internal evaluation. This study intends to explore the following questions:(1)What are the characteristics and deficiencies of the two sets of textbooks?(2)How are the applicability of the two sets of textbooks? Does it meet the needs of students? And what implications can be found? It is found that under the guidance of the Requirements, these two sets of textbooks are good at using a variety of teaching methods and providing abundantlanguage materials and online resources when paying attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive ability and cultural awareness. As for their respective characteristics,NSCE emphasizes people-oriented idea and pays more attention to human nature. Also, every part is closely connected, but the text a little difficult;NCE pays more attention to the comprehensiveness and practicability of the textbooks, while it is exam-oriented to a certain extent. In general, the two sets of textbooks can meet the needs of students. The development of textbook evaluation is helpful for students to make use of textbooks to improve their learning efficiency, and it is beneficial for the teachers to choose, adapt and use the teaching materials to enhance the teaching effect. In addition,it also provides better ideas and inspiration for textbooks' analysis and evaluation and offer nice suggestions for textbook compilers.
