Substituting Pencils With Knives

Creative prints in “substituting pencils with knives” were first proposed by Mr.Lu Xun,the advocate of new woodcut movement.As the source of the new woodcut movement,China Academy of Art(Hereinafter referred to as CAA)has upheld the spiritual qualities of “Facing the reality” and “Arts for the people” in new woodcut.Black-and-white woodcut sketch courses in CAA,founded in the late fifties,have inherited the spiritual tradition of “substituting pencils with knives” in new woodcut movement.As the transitional course aimed to connect modeling foundation and professional creation,it has deepened the language traits and value orientation of “painting like a knife” in Zhejiang prints on the premise of “substituting pencils with knives”.In the thesis,take the black-and-white woodcut sketch courses initiated by Zhao Yannian as the port,and review the course construction and teaching reform of prints in CAA from the two two-way historical dimensions of continuation and expansion.Based on the spiritual qualities of “substituting pencils with knives” and “straight cutting in knives” from new woodcut movement of prints in CAA,discuss the formation of unique “knife aroma” and “wood aroma” in Zhejiang black-and-white woodcut.In terms of the construction of printmaking course system in two-section education mode in CAA,try to put forward the teaching methodology of black-and-white woodcut sketch courses in the new context.
