The Quantitative Style Of Ba Jin's Early And Late Novels

Ba Jin is one of the greatest writers of the 20th century in China,and his novel plays an important role in Chinese contemporary literature.There was a controversy over the period of the early and late Ba Jin's novels.At present,there are two influential statements:one is divided from the background of the times,with a comprehensive anti-war as the phased point;the other is from the perspective of literary creation,"1940 narrative style change:,"1942 creative style change".Most of the related research is to select typical representative works to carry out the comparative analysis of ideological connotation,characterization,narrative style and artistic technique,and there is little quantitative analysis from linguistic point of view.This paper attempts to use the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis from the perspective of quantitative style,and make a comprehensive and objective statistical analysis of Ba Jin's novels which published from 1928 to 1949,and try to provide some new evidence from the linguistic level on the staging of Ba Jin's novels.This paper mainly from the following aspects,to carry out research work:First,established six corpus according to the current staging point of view,respectively,in 1937 and before the fiction corpus,1938 novel corpus,1940 novel corpus,1941 novel corpus,1942 novel corpus and 1943 and later fiction corpus,The total size of the corpus is 2.63 million characters.Second,collected data from the vocabulary and sentence level of language features.The vocabulary includes the calculation of word length,the statistics of word length distribution,the calculation of lexical richness,the extraction of common words and unique words.The sentence level includes average sentence length,sentence length and sentence length distribution.The data collected show that there are significant features in the lexical richness,and the characteristics of the novel in 1942 are significant.There are no significant differences in the length of the word and the sentence length.In terms of co-occurrence,the six corpuss are as high as 60%.In terms of unique words,the difference is mainly embodied in the high frequency noun,and the noun is closely related to the content of the novel,which is not enough as the distinguishing feature of the novel language style.Third,the distribution of real words and functional words,the distribution of high frequency words and low frequency parts and the use of personal pronouns are investigated.After analysis,the corpus of 1942 was obvious,mainly for the following reasons:on the one hand,the works of 1942 were composed of three short stories,and the language richness of short stories was larger than that of novels.On the other hand,the narrative mode has changed,and the narrative pattern changes based on the author's subjective conscious creative behavior.The results of this study show that the staging of Ba Jin's novels is not clearly reflected in the linguistic level.Ba Jin 's novels have a high degree of consistency in the style of language structure.
