A Report On Translating The Help

Literature translation has always taken an important place in translation history. In modern society, types of translation are broadened with various text typologies, which bring up practical writings translation. However, literature translation still runs through the development of translation theories and practice.The functions of literature translation, may not be as popular as practical writings translation, but it does play an irreplaceable role in improving Chinese-western cultural exchange, and international relationship. Literature translation, especially novel translation is of great importance in publicizing foreign advanced thoughts and educational system.The novel The Help involves three most discussed themes: human rights, race and women. It has great impact on accelerating racial equality and women liberation. This report, based on the theory of faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance by Yan Fu, and reception aesthetic by Jauss, sums up the author's translation experience; and analyses and some cases selected from the author's practice.This translation practice aims at learning more about literature translation theories and skills. Examples in the report are typical as well as difficult ones during the whole process. Through the practice, I hope to have a better and deeper understanding of black culture and oral English, and seek for correctness, logic and cohesion in the translation.
