Written by Adam Johnson, the novel collection,Fortune Smiles is composed of six respective stories, profoundly revealing love and loss, natural disasters, impact caused by science and technology and image-shaping affected by the ideology.Among this collection, story six,as a core part, tells that the two North Korean defectors,DJ and Sun – ho have great difficulty in adapting to the new life after escaping to Seoul, which is extremely abundant in material condition. For them, both people and technology there are too completely different to integrate in.However,it is the sense of isolation that makes them suffer most. The translator chooses this section as the source text to examine the personal ability of putting translation theory as well as strategies into practice. The major contents are as follows. At the very beginning, the translator mainly introduces translation task, original author and writing styles of the novel Fortune Smiles. The second part elaborates the whole translation process, including preparation, translation and proofreading. In the parts of theoretical guidance and case analysis, considering that contrastive analysis is a primary means of language and cultural study, the translator analyzes differences existing between English and Chinese from the aspects of language family, sentence structure and grammar.Firstly, owing to respective language family, classification of words is not the same: in English, the number of implicit verbs is a necessity while there are mainly verbs in Chinese.Secondly, through comparison from the perspective of sentence structure, the English language is used to putting important or critical information in the first place and focuses on hypotaxis.Thirdly,as for grammar, passive voice is often adopted in the English language. Therefore, while doing case analysis, according to problems in the process of translation and on the basis of contrastive results, the translator employs corresponding translation approaches including conversion of word class, amplification and omission, positive and negative translation, word order change and conversion from passive voice to active voice, aiming at reproducing the original text in content and structure, and at the same time, conforming to expression habit of the target language to enhance readability. The last part makes a summary about gains and shortcomings of this English-Chinese translation practice.
