The report is based on the translation of Who Mops the Floors at the Fortune 500?written by Cynthia Estlund Professor of Law,NYU School of Law.She promotes,in the material,a partial solution to the problem of underenforcement of labor standards in low-wage workplaces. The translation of the material not only enables the understanding of domestic readers with poor English to the regulation of workplaces in the U.S.,but also helps the translator to improve the translation competence and to enrich the knowledge.Who Mops the Floors at the Fortune 500?,with a lecture as its origin, mainly aims to convey information and appeals. The difficulty of this translation lies in the delivery of the intention of the author in native Chinese which is embodied in the difficulty of both lexical translation and sentence translation. The former pays attention to the translation of compounds, proper noun and common vocabulary in specific context, while the latter to the translation of passive and long difficult sentences. To these problems, under the guidance of Nord functional translation theory, the translator adopts the methods of amplification, using four-character idioms and free translation, annotation, and adjusting word order by linear translation, reverse translation and division, and uses some translation methods designed for passive sentences.Through this translation, the translator has it that pre-translation preparation and post-translation proofreading work can make translation twice the result with half the effort. The translator should accumulate various knowledge, exercise kinds of skills,so as to performe well in the next translation activity.
