Report On Exhibition Interpretation In Legend Vacation Club

Since China's entry into the World Trade Organization(WTO),the exchange between China and the rest of the world has been more frequent and the trade ties more intimate, which gives birth to numerous Sino-foreign joint ventures. In this context, the importance of translators and interpreters cannot be over stressed. The discussion about interpreters has never ceased, and the study stopped. Through continuous debates and surveys, the functions of interpretation and the qualities expected of interpreters are becoming more and more explicit.From May to December in 2016, the reporter worked for Legend Vacation Company(LVC) (Dalian) Nanjing Branch and was responsible for exhibition interpreting, liaison interpreting and conference interpreting. Despite preparations, the reporter encountered many difficulties during the practice. First of all, LVC mainly deals with holiday resorts. Hence the interpretation involved a large quantity of sales numbers and countries' names which brought challenges to the reporter's memory.Secondly,the change of occasions and difference of audiences carried with them much uncertainty, which required that the reporter be flexible and competent to emergencies. Additionally,in comparison with other interpretations, exhibition interpreting carries an obvious purpose which is to persuade. The reporter, the only bridge between the foreign speaker and Chinese audiences, was expected to inform and persuade the audience. Thus, the reporter was supposed to play multiple roles which, in turn, determined the interpreting strategies. Last but not least, due to the explicit purpose of exhibition interpretation, this activity should put more emphasis on its functions accordingly, i.e. whether the interpreter has fulfilled that purpose or not.With the help of Functionalist Skopostheorie, especially the one proposed by Christiane Nord , the reporter tried to find solutions from the following three perspectives: background information preparation, interpreters' multiple roles and interpreting strategy utilization. The reporter believes that, with China being more important in multi-national trade, this internship epitomizes more rapid international cooperation; hence, the reporter hopes to, based on this project report, propose some suggestions to future MTI teaching so that more qualified talents will be nurtured to make contributions to China's interaction with the world.
