Since the reform and opening up,China's rising has increasingly promoted the exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries in political, economic and cultural field. This trend leads to the rapid development of the interpreting industry and the mature of interpreting as a discipline. In the academia, the research focuses of domestic and foreign scholars are experiencing a gradual transition from linguistic aspect to communicative respect. This thesis is based on the author's interpreting practice in the 21 st Beijing Essen Welding & Cutting Fair, aiming to explore the role of an exhibition interpreter from the perspective of turn taking.Through the practice, the author finds out that being just a traditional “language converter” is not enough in fulfilling her responsibilities. In the thesis, the author analyzes the typical difficulties she met that hindered the smooth communication between the exhibitor and the exhibition visitors, which include turns with gaps, overlong turns, inappropriate turns and overlapping turns. Then the author discusses the corresponding turn-taking tactics, such as transferring or returning turns, making new turns, interrupting turns or ignoring turns and accepting turns to solve those problems and guarantee the smooth ongoing of the conversation.Hence, the argument that an exhibition interpreter is not only a “language converter” but also a “turn participant, promoter and controller” is proved. And it thus adds to the author's knowledge of translation theories and guides future interpreting activities.
