A Report On Guide Interpreting For The 16^th International Mathematics Competition

This report is based on the interpreting task the author performed when she worked as a guide interpreter for the 16 th International Mathematics Competition held by the Affiliated Middle School to Jilin University. During the task, the author escorted and interpreted for inbound tourists touring around Changchun City. The scenic spots visited include one natural scenic spot and several humanities scenic spots, and the traveling schedule was for four days.In addition to an introduction and a conclusion, there are three chapters in this report. The first chapter introduces the guide interpreting, task background and requirements. The second chapter describes the pre-task preparation, the process of the task and the post-task evaluations in details. The preparation includes theoretical preparation, subject knowledge, task schedule, glossary and emergency plans. The post-task assessments include self-evaluation and evaluations from the tour guide, volunteer and foreign tourists. The third chapter, also the main body of the report, is focused on the analysis of the roles of the guide interpreter as a message deliverer and a culture connector. Accuracy and fluency of interpreting are two basic requirements for a message deliverer. Working as a culture connector, the interpreter needs to master the traditional Chinese cultural background knowledge and the corresponding expressions in English, possess the cross-cultural awareness and have a better understanding of culture-loaded words. In addition, the author also reflects some strategies for guide interpreting, including acquiring bilingual capabilities, improving short-term memories, adding cultural amplifications, and so on.Hopefully, this report can provide some references for the studies on guide interpreting in China, and offer some help to future guide interpreters to better fulfill their interpretation.
