The differences between different countries in ecological environment, material culture, lifestyle, religious beliefs, customs and any other aspects lead to the generation of a large number of Cultural-Loaded Words.So-called Cultural-Loaded Words refers to those words that are beyond its original meaning or concept, and are rich in social and cultural meaning. There are a lot of Cultural-Loaded Words in Lu Xun's famous novel The True Story of Ah Q,which reflects the Chinese national cultural characteristics truthfully. There isn't a common cultural cognitive context between the original author and the target readers because of the influence of their own culture. Therefore, how to correctly understand and translate these Cultural-Loaded Words has become a major problem in the process of translation.Sperber and Wilson jointly proposed the Relevance Theory in 1986.This theory is used to explain the cognitive and communicative theory of pragmatics, but not used to guide the translation.Their student Gutt associating Relevance Theory with translation studies and put forward the Relevance Translation Theory. The theory pointed out that translation is a kind of verbal communication behavior, and it is closely related to the mechanism of the brain.Translation involves not only the code, but also the dynamic reasoning according to the dynamic context. We can say the translation version has achieved the optimal relevance when the informative intention and communicative intention of the original text have been successfully communicated. The optimal relevance is the goal of the translator, and it is also the standard of translation.Relevance Translation Theory doesn't offer specific translation methods,It considers that the methods which can help to achieve optimal relevance can be used to translate Cultural-Loaded Words as well. This argument has opened up a new perspective for translation studies.Guided by the Relevance Translation Theory, the author take the Cultural-Loaded Words from Luxun's famous novel The True Story of Ah Q as examples and bring three typical English versions as research objects.Through the establishment of parallel corpus, this thesis analyzes how to convey the relevance intention during the translation of Cultural-Loaded Words.Based on the analysis, several feasible translation methods are summarized. This paper is divided into four chapters.First comes to the introduction, which introduces the research background, research purpose, research significance and research methods. The first chapter is the literature review, which mainly presents related research of Relevance Translation Theory and Cultural-Loaded Words both abroad and home.It also introduces some basic information about the three versions of The True Story of Ah Q and the innovation of translation of Cultural-Loaded Words under the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory. The second chapter is the theoretical framework of the article. At first, the intention of Relevance Translation theory is introduced. Then it focuses on the application of Relevance Intention View in translation study. The third chapter introduces the related knowledge of Cultural-Loaded Words, including its definition, formation and classification. The fourth chapter is the core part of the paper.Different types of Cultural-Loaded Words will have different emphasis in translation. For some words that have no special meaning,we should try to maintain the original language form of the words and to convey the informative intention in the process of translation. But for some words which are full of unique cultural connotations,it requires the translator to accurately convey the original author's intention on the basis of the analysis. In the fourth chapter, the author analyzes how to transmit information intention and communicative intention in the translation of these five kinds of Cultural-Loaded Words. The last chapter is the conclusion of the paper,it includes the research findings and research suggestions. This paper aims to prove the explanatory power of Relevance Translation Theory to translation activities, and to provide a new perspective for the translation of Cultural-Loaded Words.
