Suona concerto Farewell to My Concubine is a contemporary representative of national orchestral works.It is composed by Zhu Yi,a pipa virtuoso,at the invitation of Chinese Youth Orchestra of Central Conservatory in 1989.The name of the concerto comes from the historical story under the same name,and so does the story line of the concerto.What is particularly commendable is that the melody mechanism incorporates the composing technique of Western music into the elements of Peking Opera.The very thought and trick of composing make the piece of music both contemporary and traditional.And it has recently become one of the most important works essential for every student majoring in suona in musical academies.It is also played frequently in music concert.I attempt to analyse the composing background and musical structure.My experience is integrated into the analysis of the music in terms of performing processing,technique employing and emotion expressing.Meanwhile,I talk a little about how the contemporary suona works express emotionalization and vocalization.And there are also some opinions on personal thinking.Hopefully in future suona learners could gain some reference and help in performing this piece of work.
