Chong Kee Yong(1971-)is widely considered one of the most important contemporary Malaysian composers ever.Deeply influenced by the multi-ethnic cultures and heritage of the East and Southeast Asia, his compositions run through a continuous, almost mysterious spirit called qi,which comes from the Chinese cultural traditions. From the view of music comparison,Chong Kee Yong's music provides us with a special, highly personal example of this spirit at work.In this regard, when analyzing his works,we can conclude that they are of great academic value in the compositional techniques of exploration, while simultaneously being, invaluable references for the research of the diverse personality of contemporary composers. In this thesis,I have selected Metamorphosis of VI-Wind Prayer,a specific work from the many compositions of Chong Kee Yong, which in my point of view is the most outstanding work of Chong Kee Yong thus far,due to the creative features introduced(including being written for-and performed by-three traditional Chinese instruments and ten western instruments. This thesis gives an in-depth explanation of Metamorphosis...and further discusses the creation techniques, aesthetic concepts and Eastern/Western cultural aspects included within. This thesis is composed of an introduction followed by five supporting chapters. The three-section introduction will elaborate on the creative process of Chong Kee Yong and summarize the current research situation domestic China and external abroad.Chapter 1 has five sections consisting of the research done on the organism of "flowing of the time",including "basic rhythm configuration," "Asianization rhythm configuration," the "rhythm configuration of heart beats," the "transition configuration of windows" and "the structure of music works".Chapter 2 discusses the "space organism" of this music works which is then separated into three sections:the"using of deviation of pitch organism," "same materials arranged into different music works" and"special space set up of instruments." Chapter 3 focuses on the analysis of the orchestration of Metamorphosis...which includes the unconventional techniques and uses of instruments,"multiple points and alignment of orchestration" and "the development of continuous qi.Chapter 4 analyzes the character influenced by multi-ethnic cultures and heritage of the East and Southeast Asia, and Chapter 5 is a summary of the thesis, including a further interpretation of the style, form and artistic value of Metamorphosis of VI-Wind Prayer and points out the significance of this paper in the Chinese contemporary music creation research area.
