A Study On Ethical Values Of Modern Propriety

Propriety is a kind of social behavior norm for people to discipline themselves and respect others. Its origin can be traced back to the ancient times. With the budding development of human civilization, the relevant proprieties gradually appeared. There are many proprieties and norms in the world, and the emergence of each nation's propriety and norm all should be associated with the development of human civilization. In ancient China,the development of the earliest ceremonial activities was accompanied by sacrifices, and had a direct relationship with primitive religion. After the Revolution of 1911, modern propriety was introduced to China. It was intermingled with our local proprieties, and then the collision of the two cultures arose. So far, the development of modern propriety in China has integrated with cultures in different historical periods. The relationship between rules of etiquette and society is not the same in different periods. Yet, in whatever period, there is a close relationship between propriety and morality, propriety and law, propriety and human beings,and propriety and society. China is known as the state of ceremony and propriety ever since ancient times. It is no exaggeration to say that the history of China is a history of propriety .This paper mainly includes the following aspects:Section 1: Firstly, this paper has summarized the meaning and function of modern propriety,and then briefly introduced the rise and development of modern propriety in China; the difference between modern propriety and traditional propriety has also been analyzed in this part.Section 2: The study has comprehensively analyzed the value orientation of contemporary Chinese modern propriety from the micro and macro levels, and then deeply analyzed the ethical value of contemporary Chinese modern propriety from the three aspects of value target,value foundation and value basis.Section 3: This part has put forward three main questions that modern propriety faces in contemporary China. A balance point between modern propriety and rules of etiquette has not been found; the problem of discarding traditional propriety has not been properly dealt with;modern propriety has not been completely and correctly understood and accepted by Chinese people. We should focus on the three aspects.Section 4: This part has tabled a proposal of advocating modern propriety and promoting moral construction. First of all,we should establish a sense of propriety and enhance our moral implication. Second, we need to learn propriety knowledge and improve citizen quality.Finally, we should expand the application of propriety and improve social morality.
