Medicine closely relates to human's health, and advanced medical technology contributes to the improvement of human lives.Nowadays,China has been increasingly advancing international exchanges and cooperations in the medical field, and medical translation precisely plays a critical role in connecting the medical staff at home and abroad. What's more,it also provides the latest foreign medical study trends for the domestic medical staff.Through the E-C translation of an English medical book,Clinical Trials in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthrits(Chapter 1-3),this report is aimed at providing the comprehensively full information on foreign studies on treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis for Chinese medical staff, and also to summarize some translation methods of medical English at lexical and syntactic level as the references for the translators in related fields. In this report, the author firstly analyzed the features of medical English from the lexical, syntactic and stylistic perspectives.Technical terms, polysemys, acronyms and nominalizations are abundant in medical English;passive voice, sentences with inanimate subject, subordinated sentences and long, complicated sentences are frequently used in medical texts;and medical language is generally characterized with rigorous logicality and specialized diction.A minor misunderstanding or error in translation might make a great difference to human's health and even pose threat to human lives.Medical translation thereby calls for“accuracy”and“clearness”principally and basically. To correspondently demonstrate these features in the translated text, the translator chose Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as a guide in translation practice, and combined it with some transition skills such as word conversion, addition, and division,so as to represent the information of the source text in the most closest, natural and equivalent way.The study results showed that a good medical translation generally attributed to a translator's all-round ability. To begin with, the translators should possess a good knowledge relevant to medical fields and terms,as well as to the lexical, syntactic and stylistic features of medial English;then,it is required that the translators should have a skillful command of both English and Chinese so that they are able to present the highly specialized medical language, with the employ of some translation theories, strategies and methods as well;the translators are demanded to bear enough patience and carefulness to digest the source text so that they can represent the accurate translated version. This report was expected to be able to provide some references for medical English study.
