The report is based on the translation of four different-styled medical English texts, aiming to illustrate how to apply Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to English-to-Chinese medical text translation practice. At the same time, the report discusses and summaries the translation strategies the author used at four levels, namely, words, statistics, sentences and style. In the report, the author briefly introduces the sources and the contents of the four medical English texts. Also by ways of introduction, the development and application of the Functional Equivalence Theory and the characteristics of medical English are presented. Typical examples are selected to demonstrate the use of different strategies to translate the medical English texts under the guideline of Functional Equivalence Theory. Drawing on her own practice, the author concludes that to be a good medical English translator one needs to possess a wide variety of qualities and constant practice is called for. The author hopes that translator trainees and future translators of medical English will draw insights from this report.
