Comparing The Two Aesthetic Idea Of Chinese Painting Reform During The Republic Of China Era

The improving of Chinese painting by Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian,have formed two influential paths.Xu Beihong,Jiang Zhaohe,Wu Zuoren and so on,try to use the western realistic painting language into China painting;the latter,like Lin Fengmian,Wu Guanzhong,Zhao Wuji's painting exploration,obviously influenced by western modern art.However,why formed two different traditions of Chinese painting improvement? It is easier to forget or misread what is the aesthetic idea behind their artistic creation in the long river of history.The author tries to tracing the source,through the study of Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian's theory of art,to understand the different basic standpoints and aesthetic views of improving Chinese painting.This paper is divided into three parts: in the first and the second part,the author tries to sort out recurring aesthetic views of Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian,and analysis the relationship among the views;in third part the author tries to find the relationship between their aesthetic ideas and the trend of thought in the Republic of China era.In the first part,through the collation of Xu Beihong's painting theory and evaluation of Eastern and Western paintings,the author tries to sum up his definition for painting;the cultural view,such as on one hand retaining the identity of the Confucian culture on the other hand accepting the evolution of material;the social functions of art;comments on the development history of Eastern and Chinese paintings;specific Chinese painting improvement program.In the second part,with Xu Beihong as reference,the aesthetic idea of Lin Fengmian in these aspects is summed up,to compare difference between the two,like Lin Fengmian particularly emphasis on the social functions of art.In the third part,although analysis classical articles of intellectuals from late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China era,such as Kang Youwei,Cai Yuanpei,Huang Zunxian,Lu Cheng,Chen Duxiu,Hu Shi,on the improvement of literature and painting,the origin of Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian's aesthetic ideas can been identified.
