Research On Chen Duxiu 's View Of Culture

Chen Duxiu is a historic character with strong personalities who inherited past and ushered the future in the modern history of China.If the May 4th Movement can be regarded as a boundary,he was a revolutionary fighter with an inherited spirit of democracy and since then he became an “energetic and refreshing young man” who bore the New Culture Movement on his shoulder.In advocating the New Culture Movement,Chen Duxiu introduced progressive Western culture,fiercely criticizing traditional Chinese culture by quoting “Democracy” and “Science”.However,under the influence of his early years' life experience and the limitation of that era,Chen's introduction of the Western culture and his reformation of the traditional Chinese culture were conservative,which therefore formed his unique “loaded and rebellion” culture perspective.In this paper,Chen Duxiu was studied in the modern cultural background.Integrated with Chen Duxiu's early years life experience,academic background and the era,this paper systematically illustrated Chen Duxiu's unique culture perspectives and the main contents included: repudiating feudal moralities and doctrines while propagating inherited virtues;reviewing Confucianism while reflecting Confucius and Confucianism from a dialectical perspective;breaking superstition while advocating the sprit of science;criticizing the nuisance which brought by Buddhism and Taoism while affirming their philosophical values;criticizing the old education while advocating the new education.Chen Duxiu spared adequate leeways when he deprecated the traditional culture.His cultural perspectives that combined old and new,inheritance and innovation,academic and politics were imprinted with his own characters.Studying Chen Duxiu's cultural perspectives is beneficial for us to comprehend the traditional culture objectively and viewed the New Culture Movement correctly.Moreover,it contributes to the further exploration of the propagation of Marxism in the early days and analyzing the interrelations between traditional Chinese culture and Marxism.Setting aside the rabid parts of Chen Duxiu's cultural perspective,we should advocate the objective,open and inclusive part of his idea as well as his braveness of shouldering the cultural responsibility of that particular time.This could cast historical enlightenments and practical inspirations during our course of building a socialist culture with strong Chinese characters.
