The subjects of this thesis are 259 two -Syllable words of The Lowest Level, The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages and we research the relation between their lexical meaning and morphemic meaning.Literature survey,statistical analysis and investigation have been used to analysis this word-list systematically and deeply. Based on some Chinese textbooks and the meanings of the two-Syllable words,we can externalize the meaning of the words.According to the words' meanings, we predict these words relate to the following topics: greeting, shopping, transportation, dining,social intercourse,travel and so on. In the 292 morphemic meanings,those appearing once (173) more than those appearing multiple times (119).This part will be the base of the following analysis.The definitions from Modern Chinese Dictionary (the sixth edition ) are the bases on which we analysis the lexical meaning and morphemic meaning's relation of 259 two-syllable words from The Lowest Level Word List. We classify these words into four tapes: complete transparency,comparative transparency,comparative vagueness and complete vagueness bySemantic ansparency.Through statistical analysis,we find 120 words belong to the type of complete transparency,which make up 46 percent of the total.84 words belong to the type of comparative transparency,which hold a proportion of 32 percent .50 words belong to the type of comparative vagueness , which have a proportion of 20 percent.The number of the complete vagueness type is 6,which make up 2 percent of the total.In conclusion, the completely transparent words are the most and the comparatively transparent words and the comparatively vague words are in the second place.The completely vague words are the least.Through our investigation and analysis,we gave some suggestions.In vocabulary teaching of learning Chinese as a foreign language, we suggest using morpheme-teaching method to teach transparent words.As to vague words,we advice to teach them separately or with the help of situations.Besides,we should make a concrete analysis of each specific word,so that we can find an appropriate way to teach and learn these words of this word-list as well as stimulate oversea students' keen interest at the beginning of learning Chinese.In Chinese textbook writing,we recommend that the textbook's topics are choosen according to the topics which appear in The Lowest Level Word-List and vague words have less occurance and appear late in textbook.Based on the consideration of the urgency of topics,we suggest increasing the number of transparent words and paying attention to the repetition of same morphemic meaning.In emending The Lowest Level Word-List, we suggest adding footnotes, marking phonetic transcriptions for "er" words and marking phonetic transcriptions and properties for all words.
