The Australian Wage Policy, written by Keith Hancock,is the best seller about the reform of wage policy. The book attracted wide attention from the readers of Western countries. As a famous economist in the University of Adelaide and one of the founders of the Industrial Relations Society of South Australia,Keith Hancock also served as President of the Industrial Relations Society of Australia and the Economic Society of Australia.Under the specific environment, his thinking and judgment about the economic situation had a profound influence on the Australian and also served as references for the policymaker. His statements about economic risk assessment and estimate of employment situation are even easily accepted by Australian. This translation report is based on the third part of Australian Wage Policy—The Basic Wage in the Recovery. The Great Depression brought tremendous impact on Australia. The source text introduces the economic development status, the current wage policy and the measures adopted to revitalize the economy of Australia. The writer of this report has a strong interest in Australia from the aspects of humanist history, social development and so on.The writer understood something about Australia's social development and the people's living status through this E-C translation practice.Meanwhile, the source text: Wage policy in Depression and recovery features economic information and aesthetic value. The language of this book is both rigorous and logical with concise words. It also has many complicated sentences which feature coherence, flexibility and smoothness. Moreover, there are many attributive clauses and noun clauses in the original text. This translation report focuses on summarizing the characteristics of its sentence structures and language features and analyzing the general translation methods of attributive clauses and noun clauses based on Newmark's E-C translation theory—semantic and communicative translation. Some methods were adopted in dealing with various sentence structures.According to the theory of Newmark, there is no clear definition toward them.Admittedly,it is a matter of difference of emphasis. Therefore, literal translation and semantic translation should be adopted when we translate some sentences which emphasize the source text, adaptation, free translation, addition and subtraction.Communicative translation should be used when the sentences highlight the target language. The new understanding of all the translation methods will be of great help to the translation of writings like this.
