It was the proposition of “the Revolution in the Field of Novel” and the practice by new novelists in late Qing that made Chinese novel depart from classical period and gradually run to modernity.At the same time,the development of “Female Education Movement” and the promotion of women’s liberation by social elite also made women’s life change deeply in China.“Schoolgirl” was the popular topic in late Qing society,and it was the focus of literature narrative as well.When I read the novels which were written during the End of Qing Dynasty to the Beginning of the Republic of China,finding so many image of schoolgirls which were so attractive.As an issue that collects multiple discourses,the schoolgirl in the narrative of novel provides us an broad space to discuss about it.Taking the schoolgirls as the subject for analysing,which is a special group,I try to clarify the twining phenomenon between the thought of women’s liberation and the discourse of nationalism.By analysing the image of schoolgirls in the beginning of the Republic of China,I want to observe values which behind the authors.Except the introduction and the conclusion,there are three chapters in this dissertation.In chapter 1,I want to trace back the development of “the Revolution in the Field of Novel” and “Female Education Movement” and find the opportunity which makes schoolgirls begin to appear in the novels.There are three parts in this chapter.First,by reading the novel theories of Liang Qichao and others and doing the brief introduce of some novels,I try to re-present the beginning of the boom of new novels.Second,I put my concern on the development and historical context of “Female Education Movement.”Also,by reviewing the establishment of "Girl school",I try to present how difficult it was at the beginning of pushing women’s education on China.Third,I attempt to display the opportunity which makes schoolgirls begin to appear in the novels from three aspects.In chapter 2,I try to draw the outline of the development and change of schoolgirls’ image during the End of Qing Dynasty to the Beginning of the Republic of China.Fromthe End of Qing Dynasty to the Beginning of the Republic of China,novelists continuously imagined and wrote about schoolgirls in the decade.These novelist did not build a community with similar art form,neither they had the same trend of thoughts and interests toward literature.But we can find that their imaginings and writings of schoolgirls were still presented the popular tendency of specific time background.For example,they wrote the schoolgirls through following ways: the heroine style in late Qing novel,and the imaginary depictions of beautiful women,which include talent,beauty,emotion,and morality,in the novel at the beginning of the Republic of China.On the other hand,if we view it from time,we also can find that there is its own development and change rule of these novels from the End of Qing Dynasty to the Beginning of the Republic of China.What I want to do in this chapter is not only to find all kinds of image of schoolgirls,no matter it is positive or negative,but also to establish a clear context of the development and change of it.The emphasis in chapter 3 will be put on the analysis of the development of the image of schoolgirls.When I set the development of the image of schoolgirls as the basic context of this dissertation,I am by no means to ignore the historical context and to start my discussion in isolation then.Besides,I also do not want to deconstruct these image only by superficial sociology theories.Instead,I would rather to discuss them under the historical context of the End of Qing Dynasty to the Beginning of the Republic of China,and to think it in the whole frame structure of the occurrence and development of new novels.Under the guidance of above thought,I found that there were close and deep relationships among the development of the image of schoolgirls,the change of time and literature atmosphere,the evolution of author community,and the transformation of literature types.
