It is often held that a good interpreter is one who makes fluent and clear interpreting with few unnecessary pauses. However, exactly how pauses affect interpreting quality is still unclear to the academic community due to the lack of reliable research outcomes.Although recipients' assessment of conference interpretation varies, there are some common features they consider significant for the quality of conference interpretation.Following a brief review of interpreting quality researches from the perspectives of different participants in conference interpreting, this thesis compares some existing measurements for conference interpreting quality evaluation, expounding strengths and weaknesses of each method.Based on researches by previous scholars like Ingrid Kurz, this research puts forward its own definition of conference interpreting quality.Simultaneously, this thesis analyzes pauses in conference interpreting. With evaluation measurements put forward in this research, this thesis conducts an experiment in the hope of exploring the influences of pauses on these measurements and on conference interpreting quality as a whole. This research concludes with an analysis of different effects of different pause length on conference interpreting quality and figures out the most appropriate duration.
