The studies on interpretation have gained tremendous development since the 1950 s.The Paris School set up the interpretive theory with sense as the translation unit.They also created a triangular model that showcased translation process: Interpretation-Deverbalization-Reformulation,among which “Deverbalization” has always been used as an effective tactic in interpreting activities.Base on the theory of the Paris School as well as other previous theories,Cai Xiaohong created an interpreting quality evaluation model with certain information unit,which is effective and scientific.This interpreting practice is a consecutive interpreting during the seminar on SOE reform and governance for African English-speaking countries.The interpreter interpreted from Chinese to English for the major speaker of his speech while during the Q&A process,the interpreter interpreted both for the Chinese speaker and the English speakers.The subject for this seminar was about the structure of the board of directors in SOEs and certain business law.Therefore,it had a high requirement for glossary base.But since it only mentioned some basic concepts,so it's not so demanding for the knowledge base of the interpreter.The major speaker spoke slowly with a standard accent and paused almost each sentence for the interpreter.Therefore,he's rather interpreter-friendly.However,this also caused some difficulties such as the understanding of a complete sense since he paused frequently.Besides,during the Q&A process,since the audiences are from Africa,most of them carried heavy accents,which also caused some trouble for the interpreter.In this thesis,the author utilizes the interpreting quality evaluation model raised by Cai Xiaohong to do the quantitative evaluation of the interpreting quality for this practice.According to the analysis,the interpreter delivered most of the information to the audiences,and based on her understanding of the interpretive theory,used the liberal translation tactic properly to achieve a semantic coherence.However,in terms of faithfulness,due to inadequate preparation of glossary terms and background knowledge,together with the heavy accent of speakers during the Q&A process,the omission and error rate is relatively high,which showcases that the target language is not faithful enough.Therefore,the author discovers the importance of adequate pre-task preparation,a good psychological quality,and listening skill.All in all,the interpreting quality evaluation model proposed by Cai Xiaohong provides an effective and scientific evaluation for interpreting activity,enabling the interpreter to find out the pros and cons of her interpreting practice and to improve her professional skill.Hence,it can be used as a reference to guide other interpreting activities.
