The Survey And Study Of Appliation Of Dictionaries For Thai Students When Learning Chinese In China

Although the number of dictionaries is great, they are not well accepted.Because of the inconvenience of paper dictionaries, more learners of Chinese prefer cellphones or electronic dictionaries. It is important for learners and teachers of Chinese to focus on and discuss the option, application, and usefulness of dictionaries. It is also significant for learners of Chinese to know how to consult words, define meanings of words, and solve the problems when consulting words.Based on situation of how Thai students use dictionaries during learning Chinese,this paper, on the basis of work of predecessors, involves questionnaires, surveys and analyses, and statistics; it also includes graphs to make data and results clearer,combined with learning and teaching Chinese, to offer reliable suggestions to compile dictionaries. It is concluded that most foreign students use dictionaries on cellphones in several aspects. For example, the frequency of consulting dictionaries is increasing;the situation of taking notes is better; more people use index methods on phonetics;handwriting input is preferred when searching problems come out; etc.. There are also some problems. For instance, some foreign students wildly guess the meaning of words and fail to form a habit to consult dictionaries; examples in dictionaries are too limited and difficult to be useful; the explanation of some special words are vague; the number of words should increase; etc.. This paper focuses on specific strategies and conventions of usage, and problems, offering constructive advice of forming dictionaries. The process of survey can reflect pedagogical method during teaching, such as defining word meanings.
