The Influence Of Self-esteem To Interpersonal Perception

In human activity,we need to make a judgment of other's characteristics,behavior,emotions and attitude.This process is called interpersonal perception.In the process of reality of interpersonal communication,often can produce all kinds of deviation.And self-esteem as an internal factors affect individual play an important role in the process of interpersonal perception.Self-esteem is not only classified by high and low levels,but high self-esteem can be divided into defensive high self-esteem and genuine high self-esteem.In study 1,we investigates the interpersonal perception characteristics of different high and low level of the individual in actual social situation,found that for negative interpersonal information,high self-esteem(HSE)group interpersonal perception score is significant greater than the low self-esteem(LSE)of interpersonal perception score,F(1,78)= 9.48,p <0.01;But for positive personal information,the interpersonal perception between two groups was not significant,F(1,78)= 0.01,p = 0.915).Study 2,we introduced concept of heterogeneity of high self-esteem,to research interpersonal perception characteristics of different types of high self-esteem individuals(defensive HSE,D-HSE/genuine HSE,G-HSE).Found that,the difference of interpersonal perception between D-HSE and G-HSE was not significant.Through the discussion of the results,we found that the reasons for this result is that we use is the explicit way of measurement,in general situation may not be able to measure the difference between defensive HSE and genuine HSE.The third study,we create the situation of the social exclusion,continue to study interpersonal perception of different types of HSE.Results show that under the situation of social exclusion,for negative interpersonal information the interpersonal perception between defensive HSE and genuine HSE was significant difference,F(1,78)= 14.95,p <0.001;For negative interpersonal information,the interpersonal perception of defensive HSE between social exclusion and social acceptance wassignificant difference,F(1,78)= 5.66,p < 0.05.Conclusion: self-esteem have an effect on the individual's interper sonal perception,and defensive HSE plays a very important role in interpersonal perception,especially in social exclusion situations.T his lead to the difference of the research results of the effects of h igh and low self-esteem on interpersonal perception.
