An Analysis On Adoption Of A Combined Strategy Of Domestication And Foreignization In Translating Chinese Music Literature

Music literature records musical theories, terms, history and development, involving the study of the history, production of works, criticism, and aesthetic examination of music. Music literature is an important source for people to study music, so the translation of music literature is of great significance. Compared with considerable amounts of foreign music literature translated into Chinese, it is more difficult for Chinese music literature to “go out”. The translation of music literature needs to reach across not only linguistic gap, but also psychological and religious ones, so it is not easy to complete this mission.Domestication and foreignization are two basic translation strategies, which deal with cultural elements of the target language and the source language. So far, a great many scholars have made extensive studies in music literature and translation, but only a few combine the two fields together. This thesis will discuss the goal and characteristics of music literature, explore the importance of the translation of Chinese music literature, introduce domestication and foreignization strategies, apply a combined strategy of domestication and foreignization to the translation of music literature, analyze examples of the translation of titles of musical pieces, names of musical instruments, titles of musical scores, books and notation systems, names of musical groups, performers, organizations, and musical theoretical terms, and propose targeted translation methods including literal translation, transliteration, amplification, and so on.As the number of new studies on translation of music literature is limited, this research can serve as an updated study in this area and provide some enlightenment for further studies.
