| The present thesis is a report on the translation of an English juvenile novel Sentimental Tommy by James Matthew Barrie,a famous novelist and playwright. The thesis addresses strategies for translating English personal pronouns, for the author has found that they constitute remarkable difficulties in the translating process.Personal pronouns contribute much to the overall cohesion and coherence of the text.If they are not properly handled, through redundancy of pronouns and other problems, not only the text in the target language will be hard to follow, but the original style and tone will be lost in the process of translation. Therefore,it is necessary for translators to pay adequate attention to pronouns and try to find appropriate methods for their translation. On the basis of my translation of Barrie’s Sentimental Tommy,I have summarized the different translation strategies in different situations, which work effectively in solving the problems mentioned above. This thesis sets out to examine the strategies for translating personal pronouns with case studies of examples taken from my translation of Sentimental Tommy. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, significance and requirements of the translation project. The second chapter describes the whole process of translation, including the preparation before translating, the translation process and the editing after translation. The third chapter mainly is a brief survey of the novel to be translated a contrastive analysis of English and Chinese personal pronouns, and a description of the special difficulties in translating Sentimental Tommy. The fourth chapter investigates the translation strategies personal pronouns in English-Chinese translation, especially of literary texts, based on case studies. Finally, the fifth chapter summarizes the argument of the whole thesis and draws the conclusion of the foregoing discussion. |
