In recent years,with more and more frequent communication between South Africa and China in the political,economic and cultural aspects,China has been playing an increasingly important role in the development of South Africa.Since 2015,South Africa has incorporated Chinese language into the national education system.Primary and secondary schools in South African have offered Chinese as second language elective courses successively since 2016.At present,Chinese language and Chinese culture education in South Africa are in great need,the demand for Chinese language teachers not only increase in the quantity,but also in quality.Therefore,we should help Chinese teachers in South Africa understand their own quality status clearly and improve themselves to meet the demand for Chinese language and culture in South African education system.This essay is on the basis of related research at home and abroad.Theoretically based on the new " Standards for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Language(TCSOL)" issued by Hanban,combined with the actual situation of Chinese teaching in South Africa and the writer's Chinese teaching experience at Confucius Institute in South Africa.The writer designed the questionnaire and the interview of quality status of Chinese teachers at Confucius Institutes in South Africa.Through these,the writer analyzed the details of the quality of Chinese teachers at Confucius Institute in South Africa.The results show that Chinese teachers at Confucius Institute in South Africa are mainly composed of young volunteers.They have met relevant professional requirements,more than 80% of whom have master degrees and have accomplished high proficiency in Chinese and English language,and all of them are versatile.According to the average of the five standards for TCSOL,we know that Chinese teachers are best at professional ethics and disciplinary development,and they are good at Chinese culture and intercultural communication.However,they need to improve the basics in Chinese language teaching,Chinese teaching methodology,instructional design and classroom management.In order to enhance the quality status of Chinese teachers at Confucius Institutes in South Africa,the writer put forward some relevant suggestions about training program of "Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language",Hanban selection and training mode,the management approach of overseas teaching reception unit and TCSOL's self-improvement according to the results of the survey.
