The Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia(CI UNZA)was set up in September of 2010,which is the first and the only Confucius Institute to be set up in Zambia.It has been developed for ten years and has recruited tens of thousands of people who learn Chinese.It is a platform which is in terms of Chinese-teaching and cultural exchange in Zambia,which is very representative.The author found that academic papers which are few on the aspect of Chinese-teaching in Zambia existed after reading plenty of literature.And there is a lack of surveys and studies on CI UNZA.Therefore,the author made full use of the chance of overseas internships and took CI UNZA as an example.Issuing questionnaires,interviewing leaders and teachers,etc.,are used to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Confucius Institute’s infrastructure construction,local teacher training,student learning motivation,Chinese textbook compilation,cultural activities promotion,etc.,and summarize several problems in local Chinese teaching,Including: the infrastructure of the CI UNZA has been squeezed,and teaching resources are insufficient;the types of curriculum that have been provided are not abundant at all;the Confucius Institute uses a single textbook and the quantity of textbooks is inadequate;the forms belonging to cultural activities which are organized by CI UNZA are similar,and exchanges of culture stay levels which are shallow;insufficient internal studying motive for students;lack of total Chinese teachers,especially local teachers,and content of teachers’ preparation which is insufficient.Thereby,some advice on developing Chinese teaching can be taken into consideration as follow.In the construction as well as the development which is around the corner,CI UNZA is require to intensify exchange with foreign parties,seek cooperation with other colleges and enterprises,introduce funds and improve teaching resources.According to the feedback of teachers and students,we will open new courses and enrich the types of curriculum with the aim of satisfying the demands of groups which are different of people who learn Chinese.Meanwhile,textbooks are expected to be more,and their contents should be various.Besides,speeding up the local teaching materials development is required.In the process of developing cultural activities in the future,attention is supposed to be focused on improving cultural communication level and making the forms of culture activities more innovative.For students,it’s necessary to stimulate their inherent motive.For teachers,the total number should be increased especially local teachers.And teachers should reflect their teaching behavior and enhance the quality of teaching.The thesis includes 5 chapters as follows.Chapter 1 is an introduction of background,conclusion and study methods.Chapter 2 concludes how national education and Chinese teaching develops in Zambia.Chapter 3 surveys the Chinese language teaching in CI UNZ: student surveys and teacher interviews.Chapter 4 is about the surveys results and the analysis of its achievements and issues of developing CI UNZA.Chapter 5 comes up with advice of development for the purpose of solving the problems which are existing at the present time.
