As the political,economic and cultural exchanges between South Africa and China are getting closer,more and more South Africans want to know more about China.So far,there are six Confucius institutes and six Confucius classrooms in South Africa,making it the country with the largest number of Confucius Institutes and classrooms on the African continent.Chinese language teaching is increasingly valued locally,and the number of people learning Chinese is increasing day by day.However,through the review of relevant literature,we find that there is no systematic research on Chinese language teaching in South Africa,and the research results on Chinese language teaching in South Africa are not comprehensive and perfect,especially in the problems of “Teachers,Teaching materials,Teaching methods”of Chinese language teaching.By taking the opportunity of serving as a volunteer Chinese teacher in the Confucius Institute of Rhodes University in South Africa,we conducted an in-depth survey on the problems of “Teachers,Teaching materials,Teaching methods”of Chinese teaching in the Confucius Institute in South Africa and made a detailed analysis.To ensure the credibility of the survey,we made a qualitative analysis of the problems of“Teachers,Teaching materials,Teaching methods”in Chinese teaching in South Africa by taking the teachers and students from all the six Confucius institutes in South Africa as the survey objects,using the methods of questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview from three perspectives of teachers,textbooks and teaching methods.It is found that there are some problems in the aspect of teachers,such as shortage of teachers,uneven levels of teachers,few opportunities for professional communication and lack of uniform teaching syllabus to guide teaching.In terms of teaching materials,there are some problems,such as few kinds of local teaching materials,the pertinence of teaching materials needs to be strengthened,the content of some Chinese teaching materials is outdated,and the practicability of teaching materials needs to be improved.In terms of teaching methods,there are still many problems such as the excessive use of translation teaching methods,classroom management in the implementation of communicative teaching methods,the difficulty of task design intask-based teaching methods and the excessive use of medium language.At the same time,through the analysis of the above problems,we also get some thinking.In terms of teachers,we believe that the mobility of teachers should be minimized to stabilize the teaching staff,improve the teaching level of teachers,increase the number of training to train the teaching staff,and as soon as possible to formulate a unified teaching program for teachers;In terms of teaching materials,we believe that we should make great efforts to develop local teaching materials in South Africa to enhance the pertinence of the contents.Meanwhile,teachers should adjust the contents of teaching materials appropriately to improve the practicability of teaching materials.In terms of teaching method,we believe that the translation teaching method should be appropriately used,emphasis should be placed on classroom management in the application of communicative teaching method,and emphasis should be placed on the rationality of task design in task-based teaching method and the appropriate use of medium language.This study is expected to bring some help and enlightenment to the better development of Chinese language teaching in South Africa.
