Su Shi,a pioneer and prominent poet of ci in the Haofang style,was one of the revolutionary poets of ci with his ci in innovations related to the ci form,helping established ci's status as one of the representative forms in Chinese literature.Su Shi's Haofang ci refers to those original and refreshing ci with a broader social context,which break through the narrow themes designed to write of love and parting.Su Shi's Haofang ci,with the overall characteristics of the bold,unconstrained and broad-minded style,have attracted great attention in the field of translation studies.However,research on them is often combined with Su Shi's ci in the Wanyue style or to his poems.Meanwhile,due to the fuzziness of the style,little research is focused on the transference of the Haofang style in his ci.According to Liu Miqing's Stylistic Markers Theory,the style is not vague and abstract,but can be expressed as a specific system of stylistic markers which can be recognized.The stylistic markers system can be divided into the “formal markers” focusing on the variation of sound and form and the “non-formal markers” focusing on aesthetic effect.The Stylistic Markers Theory is not only applicable to the translator's identification and analysis of the ST style,but also usable for identification and analysis of the TT style as well as the comparative analysis of differences between the styles of ST and TT.This thesis,guided by the Stylistic Markers Theory,aims to explore the transference of Su Shi's ci in Haofang style in English through use of both descriptive analysis and comparative analysis.The English versions by Xu Yuanchong,Huang Hongquan,Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,Ren Zhiji are chosen for comparative analysis considering their representation,amount,and shared pieces.Therefore,this thesis tries to take ten pieces of Su Shi's Haofang ci translated together by the above-mentioned translators as an example(in which five of them are translated by three groups of translators),describing the translation methodsadopted in terms of the formal markers,summarizing the features of the adoption according to the Stylistic Markers Theory,and explaining them from various perspectives.The study finds that there are five features of the adoption of translation methods that stand out in transferring Su Shi's ci in Haofang style into English and makes corresponding interpretation of some features more meaningful to the reader.For example,there are some differences in the translation of allusions,Xu and Yang usually omit them or shift from specific to general,while Huang and Ren will preserve them by means of annotations.The reason is the former translators believe that annotation will interrupt the reader's thought,which leads to the loss of reading pleasure.
