Translation Project Report On Vivid Translation Of Dialogues In A Romance Novel-Half Girlfriend (Excerpts)

The text chosen to be translated is Chapter 1,chapter3,chapter 4,chapter 5,chapter 6 and chapter 7 of Half Girlfriend,a English romance novel written by Indian author Chetan Bhagat.This novel is set in rural Bihar,New Delhi,Patna,and New York,telling the story of a Bihari boy who breaks the class chain and finally wins over the upper-class girl he loves.In recent years,Bollywood films in India have won a widespread popularity in China.One of the most representative films is 3 Idiots adapted from Five Points also written by Chetan Bhagat.Moreover,it is said that Half Girlfriend is being adapted into a movie,which is expected to be released in 2017.By translating Half Girlfriend,the translator hopes to bring readers a more profound understanding of the origin for a better appreciation of its movie version.This book contains a large number of dialogues with few aside,which make up the main body of the story line and the difficulty in translating as well.Therefore,the main purpose of this report is to explore how to properly apply the structures of “zenme”,verb reduplication and the repeated use of pronoun to translate these lively dialogues and aside vividly so as to reproduce the aesthetic characteristics of the original text,and reflect the moods,mentalities,personalities and actions vividly and meanwhile provide the target readers with a comfortable reading experience.The whole process of translating these dialogues in Half Girlfriend is guided by Nida's “Functional Equivalence Theory”.Based on the translator's observation,the analysis of translation cases,and searching related literature,the translator uses structures of “zenme”,verb reduplication and the repeated use of pronoun to convey speakers' moods and intense emotions such as confusion,anger,irony,curiosity,eagerness,and highlight the personalities of the characters and develop the plot.However,present dialogue translation researches based on the three aspects above have been rarely done.Therefore,this report will focus on the detailed analysis of translation strategies talked above in the dialogue translation practices and aims to make contributions to researches of dialogue translation strategies.This report is divided into four parts:description of the task,description of the translation process,case study to explain the utilities and effects of zenme,repeated used of pronoun and verb reduplication in dialogue translation,and make a conclusion of the translation practice.
