A Report On The Consecutive Interpreting For The Seminar On The Strategic Planning Of Junfeng Medical Equipment Company

This thesis analyses how the author prepares,proceeds and reviews a consecutive interpreting task in the medical healthcare sector within the framework of Relevance and Adjustability Theoretical Approach(RATA,hereafter)proposed by Li Zhanxi(2007: 47).With Chinese comprehensive strength developing fast,more Chinese-foreign cooperation has been carried out in the medical sector than before,which spurs demand for interpreters with a good command of foreign languages and medical knowledge.Guangzhou Junfeng Medical Equipment Company Limited(JFC,hereafter)is a high-tech enterprise focusing on research and development as well as production and sales of medical healthcare products.The author was luckily recommended as a consecutive interpreter for JFC in a seminar.Her duty was to interpret for its staff member and Kevin,an Australian brand planner.The practice report studies how the author analyzes the author's specific interpreting practice under the guidance of RATA.In preparation phase,the author collects materials related to medical healthcare so that she can build a shared cognitive environment with the original utterances.In performance,she seeks the optimal relevance to the speaker's communicative intention and chooses interpreting techniques flexibly to ensure the audience's cognitive consonance.In assessment,she collects the user's opinions,makes self-evaluation and puts forward possible solutions to problems she has encountered in the practice.During the whole interpreting process,the interpreter searches for relevance in the source cognitive environment and makes dynamic adjustment in the target cognitive environment.The research methodology is theoretical deduction and example analysis.The author uses real cases in the medical healthcare realm to testify the interpretative power of RATA.A retrospective approach is adopted to trace back what was going on in the interpreter's mind.The author mainly analyzes such interpreting techniques: addition,omission,division,combination and paraphrasing,and proposes possible solutions to problems she has encountered in the translation task.This thesis is a systematic analysis of the author's interpretation task under the guidance of RATA.This analysis can help her further know about her own mental workings,the speaker's informative and communicative intentions,and ways of choosing proper interpreting techniques and making linguistic choices in the target cognitive environment to adjust to the audience's expectations.For these reasons,the thesis is important to the author's academic study as well as her career.And it may provide some enlightens to interpreters in the medical healthcare sector.
