International medical conferences have the characteristics of high academic, complex logic, standard and formal words. The syntactic differences between English and Chinese make it more difficult to understand long sentences in medical conferences.Whether an interpreter can deal with long sentences quickly to form high-quality interpretation in medical conferences has become the key to a smooth interpretation. This is a report on mock interpreting practice on the 17th Congress of Asian Society for Pediatric Research. The conference is open to medical workers at all levels across Asia to share the latest clinical and research progress.Long sentences in this material are mainly the simple sentences with modifiers, compound sentences and complex sentences.Because of the immediacy of conference interpreting plus dense medical proper nouns and terms in the meeting, interpreters may have difficulties in analyzing the sentence structure, listening comprehension, memorizing, expression and so on.By analyzing the interpreting process and the transcription, the author summarizes the coping tactics of long sentences in medical conference interpretation, including linearity, reorganization, reversion and division, and the coping strategies, including simplifying notes, expanding the span of listening comprehension and expanding background knowledge reserve. The author believes that the key to interpreting long sentences lies in the analysis of sentence structure. The coping tactics and strategies mentioned above can help interpreters analyze sentence structure and logic quickly, reduce the burden of memory, organize expression, and present a high-quality interpretation that conforms to the habits of the target language.
