A Report On The Translation Of The Political Text Of The Presidency

This is a report on the translation of The Presidency,the thirteenth chapter,extracted from We the People by Benjamin Ginsberg,Theodore J.Lowi and Margaret Weir,which is mainly about the constitutional basis and resources of presidential power in the United States and involves many aspects of American politics.Liberal translation is mainly applied as this translation material belongs to the type of political expository texts.Under the guidance of Adaptation Theory,combined with the text characteristics,this report explores some problems arising from the EnglishChinese translation process.Effective translation techniques are put forward accordingly.Lexical skills such as amplification and syntactic skills like long sentence decomposition are discussed to settle lexical and syntactical difficulties.Given the acceptance level and language conventions of the target readers,the translator tries to achieve the equivalence between two languages and realize cross-cultural communication successfully.This translation report has five parts,including design scheme,general description of the source text,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.The first part introduces research objectives,research content,originalities and implementation methods.The second part includes content and linguistic features of the translation material as well as the significance and value of the report.The third part involves pretranslation analysis and preparations,solutions to the difficulties in the translation and proofreading.The fourth part is case analysis,in which examples are given to reveal how different translation techniques are adopted in translation and revision.The last part is conclusion,summarizing the whole translation process and the translator's gains and reflections.
