| The first two volumes of The Governance of China have set a good example for spreading China’s voice and telling China’s stories. This shows foreigners are eager to know more about Chinese experience. It also demonstrates how critical translation is for foreigners who want to understand China’s past and present. Therefore,it is essential that translators’ second language should be as good as their mother tongue.Meanwhile, the principle guiding their translation is equally significant. This paper, based on the interpretative approach, studies the Chinese version and English version of The Governance of China. It uses the method of case study. The interpretative approach opposes mechanical and rigid transfer between two languages.Instead,it advocates the passage of meaning and content from one language to the other. To this end, translators first need to fully understand the text in source language, which requires language proficiency and abundant knowledge.Based on full understanding, translators then should get rid of the shackles of specific words and structures of the source language.Ultimately, translators should reorganize structure and express in a way that can be understood and accepted by the readers of the target language. The book collects Xi’s speeches on various occasions. When dealing with these texts, translators are confronted with many difficulties, which are also Xi’s features, style and highlights.Using persuasive facts and vivid stories,Xi guides his comrades to reach concensus.Speaking with simple and plain language,Xi expresses his ideas lively.Properly applying rhetoric speech to his articles,Xi makes his remarks stronger. All these, however, are challenges in translation. The challenges, mentioned by the author in this thesis include typical sentences, cultural elements and rhetoric speech. To address these challenges, the author tells some translation skills based on the principles of the approach, including addition, omission, paraphrase, integration and comprehensive use of the skills above. The author also points out an exception that does not fit the application of the skills.By analyzing many cases, the author believes that the interpretative approach can guide the translation of political text and translation is not about superficial change between two languages but the transfer of meaning. |
