The study focus on comparative study of the images of “Loong” as cultural elements in both Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature. The image of cultural element expressed by literature shows the consciousness of members within the particular cultural sphere,as a result, the consciousness of the expression subjects of literature could be seen from the images of cultural elements in literature, and basing on which analysis on the subjects' consciousness would be done.Furthermore, such study also sort of provides a certain reference value to studies on characteristics of the ethnic culture in fields of ethnology and anthropology.During the whole work, the origin of the element “Loong” is the first thing to be traced.According to the archaeological remains found as well as the texts, the relative originality of “Loong” in Tibetan culture and Han culture are proved, and they both originated from the original period of literature independently, and was included into the expression of literature of necessity. The definition of “Loong” in this paper is based on such fact, and “Loong” in Tibetan and Chinese traditional literature is defined as: “A close-related aquatic specie which has the psychic ability to make an effect on natural environment.” According to such a boundary condition, some kinds of “kLu” and “v Brug” in Tibetan literature as well as numerous kinds of “Loong” are included as the different form of “Loong”.By analyzing these images of Loong, the evolution of the image of Loong in the histories of Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature could be figured out. There are two main jumps of the images of Loong in each history, while both jumps happened at a similar time during the histories of Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature. In the history of Tibetan literature, the first jump took part in the 3rd century AD-the 5th centuryAD as the image of “vBrug” appeared in the atmosphere of Tibetan literature, and the second one happened in 7cAD-9cAD as the image of “kLu” had changed a lot under the influence of Buddhism culture, which was imported into Tibet actively at the moment. The two jumps of images of Loong in the history of Chinese traditional literature took part in the 2nd century BC-the 6th century AD and 7cAD-8cAD.The first jump made the classical Loong took the part of ancient Loong, while the second one made Loong more social by endowing Loong more characteristic of human.Since the 13 th century,a clue of convergent evolution could be figured out between the images of Loong in Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature, while the image of Loong became more mature and gained currency in the creation of literature.Research methods of comparative literature is used in further study of the comparison of the evolution of the image of Loong in the histories of Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature as well as the two jumps.According to the study, the image of Loong appeared as literatural element was originally a result of the relationship between nature and mankind.Human beings was ruled with awe and dependence by nature, and Loong played a role as a representation of the power of nature. The interaction between mankind and Loong, actually, was a reflection of the relationship between mankind and nature. As a result, the jumps of the literatural image of Loong in fact mean the changes of the form of the interaction between human beings and nature, which reflects the cognition and emotion of human beings to the nature. The changes took part because of the development of social productivity, which helps the maturation of ethnic economy. The convergent evolution shows the internal connecting link of the developments of Tibetan literature and Chinese traditional literature, which provides a exhibition of the common laws in the development of culture and civilization.Literature, with humans as its expression subjects,is actually the expression of the emotion, cognition, thoughts, etc.of peoples. The evolution of literatural images reflects the evolution of culture and the form of society. The phenomenon shows in the evolution of the literatural image of Loong responses to the common law of developments of any objective things.
