With the rise of polysystem theory, translation theorists are paying more and more attention to norms that constrain translation productions. As one of important representatives of this school,Andrew Chesterman has come up with a complete series of translation norms, which can be divided into expectancy norms and professional norms, with the latter being further divided into accountability norms, communicative norms, and relation norms. The present author summarizes her experience in translating an excerpt from Burton on Burton,a capable director's affectionate recollections of his amazing career, observing and testing Andrew Chesterman's theory of translation norms, which are, more or less,a synonym of more lackluster and wavering expression of “criteria of translation”.She discusses cases that either conform to or violate these norms, and expounds in what aspects the employed translation strategies in her version serve to meet the norms.
