Two Chinese Versions Of The Old Man And The Sea: Liu Miqing's Stylistic Theory Re-examined

Style is the combination of a literary writer's literary thoughts,artistic expressions and skills.As a result,style should be given enough attention when translating.But style is influenced by various factors thus it is difficult to grasp.The Old Man and the Sea is famous for its stylistic features.The novel well represents Hemingway's style,like concise language,various rhetoric devices and simple sentence structures.It is so popular in China that it has been translated for many times.Thus the thesis takes it as an object of study,to analyze some case translations with Liu's stylistic theory hoping to provide help for translators in style reproduction.The paper firstly introduces the origin and development of stylistics and style.Then is detailed information of Liu's theory,which is theoretical basis.According Liu,style is recognizable with the aid the symbol systems,which can be divided into formal markers and non-formal markers.Then the paper analyzes style reproduction of two Chinese versions by Huang Yuanshen and Li Jihong from the perspectives of lexical level,figures of speech,syntactic and textural levels.Finally,strengths and weaknesses of the thesis are revealed.
